Chapter Six
He ran into Felix on his way out—anywhere Kaitlyn wasn’t. She might have shown some empathy, but he knew her flirtatious demeanor would soon display itself. The man gave him the side eye and Jesse stopped to speak to him.
“We know one another.”
“It was a ways back. You were still a Lieutenant.” Felix took on a faraway look, more pensive than recalling anything pleasing, his brow furrowing and the lines around his eyes deepening.
Jesse named a place, slurring the sibilant syllables and Felix’s gaze sharpened. “That’s the one.”
“You shipped back home after that.”
“Yup.” The beads in his cornrows clacking, the other man shook his head. “Never thought there’d be a call for what I did back then, here.”
“The Colonel must have been glad to have you.”
“You could say that. Can’t say as I wanted the job, but we all do what we have to. And the Colonel’s somebody I can work for.”
He couldn’t argue with that. “Did you know him too? Before?”
“More heard of him. It’s a big military until it’s not.” His tone didn’t invite any more confidences, but Jesse found himself asking anyhow.
“So you know who he really is.” It was a shot in the dark and one he regretted as soon as he voiced it. But if Felix didn’t know then he’d cover with something else.
“I know.” Felix narrowed his stare. “It make a difference to you?”
It didn’t. “The past is in the past. The military isn’t what it was and if there are any grievances in the remaining ranks, we’ll deal with it down the road. We have bigger things to worry about right now.”
“You more than most, I’d say.”
“I’m in charge,” he admitted, though he wondered if the other man hadn’t meant something different. What had he and Addy talked about?
“The Major conceded?” Felix smirked. “She all but had you stripped and mounted on the closest wall. And not to simply admire you.”
Ignoring the hyperbole, he replied, “She’ll do her job.”
“I know it. Didn’t take long to learn why she pushed to lead the reinforcements. At least the gossip. She’ll want to get up close and personal with Bridges. And with you. Good thing in different ways.”
It was ridiculous, but he found himself confiding in a guy who wore his alternate sexuality blatantly. Or maybe because of it—that, and his friendship with Addison. “I’m not at all interested in the Major.”
“Saw that. Addy did too.”
The next thing they’d be doing one another’s hair, but again he couldn’t stop himself. “She say anything?”
Felix laughed, a hearty sound that carried and had heads turning their way. “She said a lot of things. Both of you are thick, I’d say. She’s hiding behind her pride, which is pretty much all she had left when the world ended. And you don’t know how to sufficiently grovel.”
“She’s … affected by her history.”
With a sudden movement, the other man was nearly in his face. Jesse automatically defended, falling back and slinging his rifle around.
Felix stilled, and stepped away, rubbing the back of his hand against his mouth.
